A browser game can remember a high score without creating a portable account. It can also offer an account while keeping some settings only on the current device. Before moving to another computer, resetting a browser or clearing website data, identify what the game actually saves and where the publisher says it is stored. This is a preparation task, not a promise that every game has a recovery method. A few careful checks are far less frustrating than discovering after maintenance that a familiar score existed only in one browser profile.
Identify the record you want to preserve
List the items that matter: a completed campaign, unlocked stages, a personal record, control bindings or an account name. They may use different storage routes. A public leaderboard entry is not necessarily a complete save, and a screenshot of a score cannot recreate unlocked content. Naming the record prevents a vague assurance that the game saves automatically from being mistaken for a complete backup plan.
Read the game’s own help, settings and account information. Look for explicit statements about local storage, cloud synchronisation, export or supported transfers. If the instructions are silent, treat portability as uncertain. Do not infer that a visible username means every state is stored remotely, or that a game without a login must lose all information immediately after the tab closes. Implementation details differ.
Keep browser profiles and origins in the picture
Website storage belongs to a browser context and an origin rather than to a game title in the abstract. A different browser profile or a different host can therefore present a fresh state even when the artwork looks identical. Record the address you normally use and the profile where your progress appears. This helps distinguish a missing save from simply opening another context.

Browser storage is not an unconditional long-term archive. MDN explains that storage limits and eviction behaviour vary, and that some data is kept on a best-effort basis. For a player, the practical response is to use documented export or account features when they exist. Avoid assuming that a long history of successful reloads proves the record will survive every future cleanup, profile change or storage-pressure event.
Use supported export and synchronisation features
If the game offers an export file, follow the creator’s instructions and save the file with a recognisable game name and date. Check whether the export represents a complete save or only selected settings. Keep an unchanged copy outside the browser’s temporary download area. A downloaded file you cannot later identify is a weak substitute for a simple, well-labelled record.
For account-based progress, confirm that you can access the intended account through the official route and that the current state is actually associated with it. Do not share credentials or recovery codes as part of an ordinary support request. Where the game supports checking progress on another device, use that documented procedure before retiring the old one. Leave the original working state intact until the transfer is confirmed.
Treat cleanup as a potentially destructive action
Deleting cookies or site data can affect more than a login prompt. Depending on the game, it may remove preferences, locally stored records or other state. Read the browser’s description of the chosen action and understand its scope. A broad reset is not a neutral diagnostic step when your only known copy of progress remains inside that browser profile.
Before maintenance, close unnecessary tabs only after checking the game’s saving behaviour, and preserve supported exports. Do not copy random database files or install a save-recovery extension on the assumption that it is harmless. Those actions can expose data or create a misleading sense of safety. When a supported recovery route is absent, acknowledge the uncertainty and decide whether the maintenance benefit justifies the possible loss.

Use screenshots as evidence, not as a full backup
A screenshot can preserve a visible achievement, a version label or an error message. It is useful when explaining what disappeared or documenting a personal record. It does not normally contain the underlying state needed to restore a game. Keep the distinction clear so a photograph of a completed stage is not treated as proof that an importable save exists.
Crop account details, private tabs and unrelated information before sharing a capture. Include only the evidence needed for the question. If contacting the creator, supply the exact game address, browser context, approximate time and the maintenance action performed. Avoid claiming that a particular storage mechanism failed unless you have documentation supporting that explanation. A factual sequence gives support a better chance to identify the relevant system.
Build a small habit around important progress
When a game provides a legitimate export option, use it at meaningful milestones rather than after every action. Keep a few clearly dated copies if the instructions allow it, and do not overwrite the last known working file until a new one is confirmed. The aim is recoverability with minimal administration, not a sprawling folder of indistinguishable downloads.
Recheck the process when the game or its account system changes. A new version may alter supported transfers, while an old export may not be compatible forever. Read the creator’s guidance before importing into a different release. Keeping the original file and version information allows a focused question if something fails, and avoids turning a recoverable compatibility issue into an irreversible overwrite.
The best time to understand a save is before you need to recover it. Identify the record, locate the documented storage or transfer route and preserve a working original while testing. Some short arcade games offer little beyond a local high score, and that limitation should be recognised rather than hidden behind an invented cloud feature. With a clear picture, routine browser maintenance becomes an informed choice instead of an accidental gamble with the progress you value.
